Leroy Brady, Reese’s uncle: Best thing to happen to our family

Monday, May 19th, 2008, 11:59 am

I think it is the greatest think that has ever happened in our family. Cathy is my sister. Of course, I would love to go to the Olympics to watch Reese compete, but that is not possible. So I will watch him on TV.

Lois Noel, Reese’s aunt: Wish I could go to China to watch him

Monday, May 5th, 2008, 11:53 pm

I am one of four sisters of Reese's adopted mother, Cathy. We are all very proud of Reese. My husband, Eddie, likes to keep up with Reese's progress. Wish we could go to China to watch him in the Olympics, but we will have to watch it on TV. AND WE WILL!

Best of luck to Reese!!!

Carla Fenwick, Reese’s aunt: He’s my shining star

Monday, April 28th, 2008, 9:32 pm

I refer to Reese as a big huggy bear. He has always been a little shy and quiet. But he has always given the best hugs and has the brightest smile. He will touch anyone's heart. When Cathy, my sister, told us about Reese changing the tire on a truck without a jack, it did not surprise me, at all. I also knew he was strong and could do whatever he put his mind to.

However, when I heard he was going to the Olympics in 2004, I could not believe it. (My nephew in the Olympics?) I told everyone at work; at the grocer’s, at the doctor’s office and at just about every other place I ever went. I started carrying around pictures and e-mail letters from Cathy telling about Reese. I was so proud of him.

I watched Olympic coverage on TV every time he was scheduled to throw. I even stayed up till all hours in the morning. I still could not believe my eyes when I saw him on TV. (My nephew in the Olympics?)

He almost won. I know he wanted a gold, a silver or even bronze medal. But as far as I was concerned, he was a winner even without a medal. Just to be able to go to the Olympics was a huge win. I know his travels around the world are a dream come true for him. And to me, he is a DIAMOND like a shining star.

I will watch Reese when he is in the Olympics in China this summer. Every time his event is scheduled to be televised, I will be in front of that TV, watching Reese, my huggy bear nephew. I would give anything to go and see Reese win the gold in person. But I can't, unless I win the lottery. I know he will bring back the GOLD. But win or not, he still my shinning star.

Barbara Foerst, Reese’s mother-in-law: He’s now my child

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008, 5:06 pm

My husband, Denis, and I have four children, most of whom were active in sports. We spent many nights and weekends watching them compete. Our daughter, Renata, took up the shot put in high school and was State AAAAA Champion in both her junior and senior years. When Renata went to the University of Georgia, she competed in the shot put and hammer throw. We traveled to her competitions, but we got to watch Reese only on rare occasions when the two of them competed in the same meet. After Renata’s graduation from UGA, Renata and Reese were married.

Now Reese is my child whom I watch compete. My husband and I travel to most of the U.S. Track and Field Outdoor National competitions and any local meets. We also watch most of the European meets in which he competes live on the Internet. We wish only that we could get comparable coverage of the U.S. meets! Three and half years ago Renata, Denis, and I went to the Greek Olympics to watch Reese compete. I thought when the Olympics were in Atlanta that I had satisfied my dream of seeing the Olympics in person, but now we’re planning on seeing our third Summer Games in China.

Peggy Jackson, Reese’s aunt: I’ll never forget the day little Reese tackled me

Monday, April 14th, 2008, 1:21 pm

I’m one of Cathy’s four sisters. Reese hadn't been in the family long, but I already knew he was a very strong kid for his age. Since I was away at college and only home on weekends, I took whatever opportunity I could to play with my many nieces and nephews.

One day, we started a game of tag football. Since my knowledge of the game only extended to the fact that the ball wasn't round and my opposing team was composed of six children ranging in age from two to eight, we created our own rules. I had to make it across the yard to the garden, while they tackled me as a group. There I was dragging five kids who were hanging on to my legs and laughing hysterically, when I heard a shout, "Watch for Reese!"

I looked up in time to see this small boy across the yard, pawing the ground like a tiny bull. I knew what was coming! I tossed little kids left and right, so they wouldn't get caught in the inevitable tackle. About the time the last little hand let go of me, Reese tackled me from behind. We must have gone another 10 feet, rolling and tumbling. He was only seven. I never played that game again!!!
