Welcome to the Daily Activities for Baby Connect group brought to you by http://www.huggieshappybaby.com/products/index.aspx?diapers&WT.mc_id=gysr011307&ice=iv,huggblog,hugghappy">HUGGIES®.
Recently, some friends and I have been talking about how to keep toddlers occupied and happy when going out to eat. I think the things that apply to keeping a toddler happy in a restaurant can apply to anywhere you may go with your baby and you need to keep her confined to her seat for any length of time. This also works for young preschoolers, as well.
Each of my children has a personalized mini-backpack. They are the perfect size for a couple of small coloring books, a box of crayons or markers, a few small toys and the never-leave-home-without-it “lovie”. One of my friends is married to a chef so she and her two girls spend quite a bit of time in restaurants, she had a great suggestion for our “entertainment” backpack. She suggested buying the “paint with water” coloring books and a travel pack of cotton swabs to use as the paint brushes; then all we would need at the restaurant is a small cup of water to have an entertained toddler. It worked like a charm!
I discovered another one of our favorite “small toys” when we were driving 400 miles to Grandma’s house with a young toddler. I bought her a travel-size magnetic drawing tablet. It was easily her favorite activity on our long drive. She was fascinated by her ability to draw and then erase it just by sliding the “magic” eraser. She loved for me to draw our family and then she would attempt to draw us. We drew letters, we played tic-tac-toe (well, okay, *I* played tic-tac-toe but she always won…now there’s a mom for you!), we wrote all of our family members’ names. The doodle tablet was probably the best purchase I made before that trip and even now, we don’t leave home for any length of time without them!
Another of our entertainment solutions was something that is important to both my husband and me. We are both avid counted-cross-stitchers – him more so than me these days. We want our kids to learn to stitch eventually. We aren’t about to sit them down with 36-count linen and silk floss or even 7-count Tula and perle cotton floss; but stitching cards have been a lot of fun for us. We want them to get accustomed to the motions and “flow” of a needle and thread through a hole. We also use the plastic “needle” that comes with many of these stitching cards, fun colorful yarn and plastic canvas. They don’t have to make anything, we just let them “stitch” and they love it. To them, and to us, their plastic canvas and yarn creations are just as beautiful as anything we make with linen and silk.
And of course, you can never go wrong with a few small books or fun magazines. My kids also love to find the toy catalogs in their backpacks. Favorite story books are always great, but a toy catalog? That is really entertaining! They don’t seem to know that the catalogs are for buying things, they just like to look at them. It has been a good thing for helping me with holiday and birthday shopping, too.
A “confined toddler” doesn’t have to be an unhappy one. With a little planning and a box of goodies, you can keep her happy in her high chair or car seat for quite some time!
